Alex’s Safe Harbour

Non-Profit Board Opportunities

Alex’s Safe Harbour was established in 2009 and is dedicated to providing a place where grieving children, teens and families can find compassion and understanding through peer support groups. Alex’s Safe Harbour also provides community outreach and education to promote “good grief” support within our community. The programs we offer are completely free and open to anyone who wishes to attend. Alex’s Safe Harbour is a Canadian registered, non-profit charitable organization and relies solely on the generosity of individual donations, the business community, foundations, service clubs and organizations for funding.

Alex’s Safe Harbour is seeking dedicated Board members for a 2-year term; who are willing and able to roll up their sleeves and help this relatively new but fast growing organization further establish itself in the community.

We are seeking board members for the following roles and fields of expertise:

  • Director(Community volunteer)
  • Director (Law)
  • Director (Marketing)
  • Director (Social Services)
  • Director (Fundraising)

We are not limited to just these fields so if you have something to offer and want to “give back” please contact us.

While prior Board experience is not mandatory, it is very desirable. A personal connection to and/or special interest in grief and bereavement will be considered a plus. Directors are expected to attend one meeting per month, as well as any special events planned by or for Alex’s Safe Harbour.

Volunteer Form

“I love volunteering with Alex’s Safe Harbour because when I went through loss myself there was nothing available, aside from sitting in a room with a Counsellor who may or may not have been through a loss (who knows?) and certainly did not seem to be well trained in how to cope with loss. Being able to be part of something that helps others through their grief process is very rewarding, and is also helpful to me as I continue with my grief journey”.

Grief Support Group Co-facilitators

Bereavement support groups are held in the evenings, one night a week. Our volunteer facilitators are interviewed, screened and are required to undergo a security check with the Police Department, as well as screening through the Child Abuse Registry. They are offered in-depth training in how to facilitate peer-led, grief support groups. Each group has 2 co-facilitators and they are required to commit to a minimum of 1 year’s service.

Please contact our Bereavement Coordinator, Trish Dominie, if you are interested in this very special volunteer opportunity.

Behind the Scenes Volunteers

There are many ways you can help out at the Center, without facilitating groups. We need help in the office with grant-writing, preparing rooms for evening groups, gathering and organizing arts & crafts materials, (etc.), for children’s groups, general maintenance of the facilities, public relations, and so on.

Special Events Volunteers

Each year we will put the “fun” in fundraising and hold several events that will help to raise public awareness of Alex’s Safe Harbour and promote “good grief” support. There are many different ways that you can get involved with these events: for example, volunteers are always needed prior to and on the day of the event. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of our events, please click here to fill out a volunteer form.
