Nomination Guidelines

Overview

Alex’s Safe Harbour will honour the outstanding contribution of a Nova Scotia resident who have made significant contributions to their community, especially the grief and bereavement of children and families, because of, or in spite of personal loss.

The Award will be presented in November of each year. Nominations will open June 1 and close on September 1 of the same year.

Who May Nominate

Any one can submit a nomination in writing or via the website.

Eligibility

Any person who currently resides in, or has resided in, Nova Scotia is eligible for nomination.

How to Nominate

All nominations should include:

the person’s full name,;

employers;

contact phone number(s);

email address (if available); and

Pertinent information concerning the person’s contributions, experience and history as it relates to grief and bereavement in the community.

However, nominations should not include voluminous materials, rather clear, concise statements of achievements are of more value. Information from public sources should be recognized for their source and contact information included to verify any claims.

Electronic Awards Nomination Form

This form will be accessible on Alex’s Safe Harbour website on June 1 and will be available until the deadline of September 1 for the current year’s award.

What information to submit for a Nomination?

Nomination may include any or all of the following:

  • A brief statement giving the major reason the person is being nominated for the Award
  • Rationale for the nomination
  • Work experience / history (including volunteer)
  • Degrees earned / Education;
  • Publications / Media / Blogs / etc.
  • Offices held in organizations
  • Awards, honors and inventions
  • Accomplishments; and/or

Supporting Letters (Nominators are responsible for collecting all supporting letters and submitting them as part of the award nomination. For online nominations, nominators will upload supporting letters to the nomination form. The support letter must be a PDF document. For hardcopy nominations, nominators will include supporting letters as part of the nomination packet.)

Nomination Deadline

All nominations must be received by Alex’s Safe Harbour Society no later than September 1 of each year.

Re-nominations

An individual who has not received the Beacon of Hope in previous years, can be re-nominated in subsequent years but all information must be re-summited annually. The award cannot be awarded to the same person more than once except under special consideration by the Board.

Selection Process & Notification

Following the Closing date, the Board of Directors for Alex’s Safe Harbour (or person(s) assigned by the Board of Directors) in conjunction with staff, will review all nominations. A final decision will be made on or before September 10th of each year. Only the winner will be notified directly by Alex’s Safe Harbour. If for any reason the person is unable to accept, the next suitable nominee will be contacted. Public notification will be made through a variety of methods, including media release, social media, websites, emails, etc.

Award Presentation

The Beacon of Hope will be presented annually in November at the Annual Dinner or at time and place to be determined by the Board of Directors. Upon notification of selection, the recipient must agree to attend the award ceremony at the Annual Dinner and to have their names and photos used for promotion / marketing of Alex’s Safe Harbour Society. If unable to attend, consideration will be given to the next highest candidate who agrees to attend. Exceptions will be made for emergency situations.
